December 27th-29th 2021 – Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night…

Over the past year, we have all been experiencing the growing challenges of driving in Israel, especially in the center and big cities. The roads are crowded, construction and renovation projects abound, various small motor vehicles crowd the city streets, parking is a nightmare, etc. Amidst this daily nightmare scenario, our delivery people weave in and out of cities and neighborhoods to bring your weekly fresh produce boxes which carry their special aura of fresh air and green beauty.

December 20-22, 2021 Good for the Heart, Good for the Eyes

After many weeks that were too warm for comfort, we are finally experiencing rainy and stormy days. Here at Chubeza we prepared for the inclement weather by spreading Agril protective cloth over the greens, and by reenforcing the growth houses to stand strong in the wind. Most importantly, we completed this round of planting just in time for the rain. Between barrages of rain, we hope to be visited by a friendly wintery sun to dry the veggies and warm ‘em up.

Our greens, too, would love some sun, which they consider their best of friends. After lapping up the rain, their leaves thirstily drink up the sunrays, absorbing them within to generate energy for healthy growth. In honor of the rain and the greens of warm and cold, I’ve decided to tell you a bit about our spinaches – one, an actual spinach and member of the Amaranthaceae family, and the second, the New Zealand spinach from the family of coastal plants, who masquerades as spinach.

December 13th-15th 2021 – CELEREEE, CELERAH, CELEREEE, CELERA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA…

Rain has now started to be a permanent visitor, along with some nice sunny days that encourage growth and brighten the field. This week I’d like to write about a permanent winter guest who is delighted by the moisture that enables him to joyfully fatten up. You’ve seen (and nibbled) the results before your very eyes: it’s celery!
Its name carries the exotic origins of the French “céleri,” derived from the Greek “Selinon,” of the Apiaceae family. In Hebrew, its official name karpas reached Hebrew from the Aramaic, which borrowed it from the Greek word karpas meaning “fruit of the earth,” i.e., vegetable. It is no coincidence that karpas may also remind you of lavish fabric (as used in the Book of Esther to describe the décor of King Ahasuerus’ castle), for karpas is evidently related to a fine green-hued cloth.
Karpas (celery) belongs to the botanical Umbels family, in which all parts of the vegetable are edible: the round root, its crunchy stalk, the nutritious leaves and its teensy, tiny seeds. Today, we will primarily discuss leaf celery.
