The tomato is one of Chubeza’s pioneer crops, together with us in the field from Year One.   Her prime position in the kitchen, the Israeli vegetable salad, and the garden made her a    pivotal inclusion in the weekly fare of our boxes. Last week we gave you an inside glimpse at growing tomatoes in the fields of Chubeza. This week our focus will expand to the fascinating saga of the tomato’s historical and geographic journeys.

העגבניה נמצאת אצלנו בסל כל השנה, אבל בקיץ היא במלוא טעמה והדרה. לפעמים, בשל היומיומיות שלה, מקבלים אותה כמובן מאליו, וכבר זמן רב שלא עסקנו בה, אז לפרי האהבה הזה אנחנו מקדישים את העלונים בשבועיים הקרובים. הרבה עובר עליה, על הנחמדת החביבה האדמונית מהרגע בו היא נשתלת באדמה הפוריה הממתינה לה, ועד שהיא מגיעה לעגלגלות אדומה ומוכנה לקטיף: מגנים עליה מכל משמר, מטפחים אותה, קושרים אותה לגובה, מדשנים אותה, משקים אותה, מאכילים אותה בשמש מרום. היא מחוזרת על ידי דבורים מקסימות, מותקפת על ידי עשים חסרי מצפון ובתוך כל המהומה, ממשיכה לעשות את דרכה אל ההבשלה המתוקה הממתינה לכם בסלים.

July 8th-10th 2019 – Fragrance of a Melon

While we at Chubeza maintain the identity of veggie farmers working the land and growing vegetables, there was a moment or two when we considered planting a small fruit orchard. In the end, we decided to stick with those crops that grow close to the earth, and leave the fruit department to Helaf of Melo Hatene Orchards. And yet, we are very pleased to claim the glory of a couple of fruits that have become regulars in our summer boxes, because they grow calmly across the open field, not on a tree or bush. They are, of course, the melon and watermelon. We’ve already discussed the tough brother, Mr. Watermelon, so this time the melon rates the Newsletter spotlight.

8-10 ביולי 2019 – ריח מלונים

כבר כמה שבועות שפירות מתוקים ועגולים מתחילים להציץ בארגזים – אז השבוע עלון שכולו מתיקות וקיץ – על הפירות שבשבילם כמעט נסבל לעבור ימי קיץ חמים כמו אלו שעוברים עלינו, או לפחות אם בלתי נסבל, אפשר תמיד להתנחם בהם – המלונים…

בינתיים אנחנו בח'ביזה דבקים בזהותנו כפלאחים, עובדי אדמה, מגדלי ירקות. היה לנו רגע או שניים שחשבנו לטעת מטע קטן של עצי פרי, אבל בינתיים החלטנו לדבוק בקרוב לקרקע, ולהשאיר לחילף מ"מלוא הטנא" את אגף בוסתני הפירות. ובכל זאת אנחנו לא מוותרים על זוג פירות שהפכו כבר אורחי קבע בארגזי הקיץ שלנו, וזאת משום שהם גדלים בהשתרעות נינוחה בשדה הפתוח, לא על עץ ולא על שיח – הלא הם המלון והאבטיח.

Watermelon season at Chubeza is really short – approximately a month – so before it ends, we want to share some fascinating facts about the wonderful watermelon. This week’s Newsletter is green and red all over…

Summer officially arrived last Thursday, and the hot, heavy days are becoming more and more prevalent. But while we moan and groan about the oppressive heat, the watermelon remains unfazed. It just loves the heat, a throwback to its origins in the southern part of the African continent, the Kalahari Desert. In the scorching desert, the watermelon, boasting a more-than-90% water content, was an important and vital source of liquid to humankind and wild animals. The difficulty in choosing a good watermelon is an old story. Even in its wild form, the sweet watermelon is identical on the outside to a bitter watermelon, which is why the thirsty passerby would punch a hole in the watermelon rind to test its taste.
