5-7 ביולי 2021 – הקיסר הצהוב – חלק ב'

בח'ביזה אנחנו מתחילים לזרוע תירס (או אולי נכון יותר לקרוא לו "מייז") בסוף מרץ. שני הסבבים הראשונים נזרעים במרחק של כחודש בין האחד לשני. הסבב הבא נזרע אחרי שבועיים-שלושה, הבא מגיע שבועיים אחריו ואז מתחילות זריעות בהפרש של שבוע זו מזו. הסיבה לתנועה הזו היא תחלופת העונות והתחממות מזג האויר. אם לסבב הראשון נדרשו 100-110 ימים כדי להגיע לבשלות, אלו האחרונים כבר מבשילים תוך 80-90 יום. כך שיוצא שמרווחי זריעה משתנים כאלה הם המאפשרים לנו לחלק לכם קלחי תירס מתוקים כמעט מדי שבוע, והכי הרבה בהפוגות קלות של פעם בשבועיים.

בשבועות האחרונים אתם פוגשים בארגזים את מלך הקיץ שלנו – התירס. כל שנה הוא מלווה אותנו מחודש יוני ועד נובמבר, נפרד יחד איתנו מבית הספר, קופץ למים אל החופש הגדול, ושב איתנו ללימודים בסתו. הוא מתחיל להבשיל באמצע יוני, שהשנה היה אביבי ונעים למדי, ממשיך בנאמנות ללוות אותנו לתוך הלהט הקייצי הבלתי נסבל של יולי-אוגוסט והחמסינים של ספטמבר, ונושם איתנו לרווחה באוקטובר, מוודא שמזג האויר חזר לשפיות, ורק אז נפרד מאיתנו בנובמבר. לא תגידו מלך?

June 21st-23rd 2021 – Take a breath, Smell the summer

Summer exudes the aroma of the ocean, the swimming pool, and suntan lotion. It carries the fragrance of ripe fruit – melon, figs, grapes, overripe peaches, and more. In our packing house, summer has a very distinct aroma of basil. When the basil-laden boxes stand in the packing house, it is hard to ignore the heady scent in the air that spurs the taste buds to fantasize on pesto.

After some years in which we grew basil and were burned by vicious diseases that attacked and destroyed any green leaf in the vicinity, we took a break for several years. When we tried again, we failed repeatedly. But last year we decided to try a new disease-resistant (or so we're told) basil variety. At the start, we cautiously seeded it in smaller beds, which is why it was an infrequent guest in your boxes. Later, we expanded the planting. And now, the time has come to declare Basil as the aromatic star of this week’s Newsletter!

21-23 ביוני 2021 – לכבוד הקיץ שהגיע

לקיץ יש ריח של ים ובריכה וקרם הגנה, של פירות בשלים – מלונים, תאנים, ענבים, אפרסקים מתוקים. ובבית האריזה שלנו יש לקיץ ניחוח עז של ריחן. כשארגזים עמוסים ריחן עומדים בית האריזה קשה להתעלם מהריח החזק, והמחשבות מפעילות את בלוטות הרוק שכבר טועמות את הפסטו העתידי. אחרי כמה שנים שגידלנו ריחן ונכווינו ממחלות עלים שונות שהיו תוקפות אותו ומחסלות כל עלה ירוק, עשינו הפסקה של כמה שנים, חזרנו שוב לגדל, ואז נאלצנו להפסיק שוב, ובשנה שעברה, בזכות זן חדש עמיד למחלות חזרנו לגדל את הריחן, הזמנו שתילים מן המשתלה וגם הכנו בעצמנו שתילי ריחן מזרעים – השתילים הרעננים הועברו אחר כבוד לשדה, וצמחו שם במרץ, עד שהגיעו לקטיף. לכבודו אנחנו מקדישים את העלון השבוע.

Beans just love moderation. As for the rest of their Legume family relatives, they just love the extreme. Fava beans and peas thrive on frigid cold weather, while soybeans and black-eyed peas adore the scorching sun. The beans, however, seek weather that’s just warm enough and just ventilated enough – in essence, an in-between-season climate. Which explains why beans are one of the only crops to be associated with spring and autumn in our field, always dropping in for a very short visit timed to avoid the onerous summer heat or the winter chill that follows their autumn visit. This particular spring has been perfect for Ms. Bean: only a few heavy heatwaves, moderate and gentle. What a field day for the bean!
