November 15th-17th 2021 – Beet This!

…and in the midst of this whole Corona deal, the seasons are a-changing, the days grow longer, the air is buzzing with life, and flowers are in bloom everywhere. The re-energized vegetables are growing away, smiling up to the warm sun and getting a little help from the friendly Chubeza irrigation system.

Spending all this time at home with family members, pets, books and cooking, one may find him/herself suddenly noticing someone/something that has been around this whole time but had gone unnoticed in the hectic days of normal reality.

This is the case with me and the lovely beet. Although it’s been with us for some time now, I’ve neglected to acknowledge its many virtues. The beet is one of the first vegetables to proclaim the transformation from summer to winter, and one of the last to leave us, marking the end of spring. This season it comes to you complete with its beautiful green leaves where the beet has stored the sunrays that helped him grow. So in honor of this wonderful vegetable – beat along with us as we sing its praises.

November 8th-10th 2021 – Green Leaves Was My Delight

We anxiously await the rain. Sukkot has come and gone, the tabernacles have been disassembled, and though we were rewarded with a few nice downpours, they are but a mere appetizer for the Real Thing. Now it’s high time for the main course! The fall seesaw is here with the weather rapidly changing from surprising heat and humidity to days of mild weather and cool mornings. Some days, the skies are beautifully adorned with clouds, in place of the very light blue skies of summer, and every so often a breeze will move them to and fro, scattering dry leaves and lovingly teasing the greens in our field.  But alas, the actual rain has not yet graced us with its appearance, and it is thus time for our little Chubeza Rain Dance to beseech the skies to shower us with their treasure!

October 25th-27th 2021 – BRING IN THE MAGIC

Sometimes, when our expectation for rain meets with the anxiety of the rain’s failure to arrive, resulting (yet once again) in a make-believe winter, I get the urge to turn to witchcraft. I’d love to have a book of incantations with instructions for concocting a brew from thirsty clods of earth, dried up-snails, a few strands of tresses turned white from worry, and summer vegetables (who have no urge to return their gear to the quartermaster and head off into the sunset). After mumbling some mumbo jumbo, abracadabra – the heavens would open up and shower us with a luscious, rainy, cold and satiating winter.

So even though this week’s forecast is looking rather glum and the temperatures are too warm for late October, we cling to our hopes and prayers for a blessed, rainy winter. Joining us in our hope and anticipation are the winter vegetables, including the very prominent and strong roots of the Cruciferae/Mustard family growing underground. And if any vegetables can make magic happen, it’s them! So, in honor of the return of the Brassicaceae family’s radish roots, I am re-posting a well-rooted bewitched and super mustardy newsletter. Cackle, cackle…
