July 1-3, 2024 – A FIELD DAY IN THE PUMPKIN PATCH
Each year, the summer brings a bevy of new vegetables, including the rich array of tempting varieties of Chubeza’s squash
This week, we’re delighted to introduce a new artisan and a distinctive new product: Yael Cohen of Jerusalem, who crafts natural cosmetics and creates soap from… vegetables! Amazingly enough, using vegetables has remarkable benefits for soap-making. Let’s hear from Yael:
I’m Yael, a creator of soaps and natural skincare products from raw ingredients. I make my soaps from natural butters, oils, and ingredients that promote skin and body health. Vegetable-based soaps have significant advantages: they grant a second life to discarded vegetables before they return to the earth, transforming them into distinctively beneficial soap. What’s more, the vegetables contain natural sugars that enhance the soap’s lather, making it richer, more delightful, and nourishing. They also add color as they grant the soap a special vitality and energy from fertile soil.
Every month, I’ll create a soap made with vegetables now in season. I’m sure you’ll love it!
Yael
This month’s featured product is Pumpkin Soap. We invite you to meet the familiar pumpkin from your veggie box in a surprising, unexpected way…

Ahead of You Is the Ancient Rain
Ahead of you is the ancient rain
Warmth at your back, you stand and ponder
How only a few words are needed in one’s life
And you think of he who sees it all, and he
Whose face is wind and foliage and rain
That is hammering on the window

Autumn has arrived, and the rain has come back our way, beginning with bursts of showers mixed with sunny hours that warm our backs. Yet we hope that true winter days will follow, bringing us blessed rains, new life, growth from the land, and healing for those who dwell upon it.
This time of year, your Chubeza box truly transforms, as each week we bid farewell to summer produce members (cherry tomatoes, mint, basil, corn, edamame, Malabar spinach, and other
On the other hand, we joyfully welcome the yummy autumn and winter vegetables so sorely missed over these long months. We’ve already begun, and the coming weeks will mark the harvest of such winter greens as chard, spinach, kale, tatsoi, arugula, and a new trial crop this season: watercress. Joining them are celery, leeks, and scallions. From a different story come cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, and soon-to-arrive broccoli. The roots that nestle deep in the soil are already being harvested – beets, radishes, carrots, Jerusalem artichokes, and even the juicy fennel is joining the party.
We anxiously await the arrival of two additional fall guests, returning after a relatively short goodbye in late spring: zucchini and beans (green/yellow). They don’t fare well in extreme heat or cold, so they’re only with us during the mild seasons – in spring and once again in fall.
After a season that began to feel boringly repetitive (eggplant again, pumpkin again, lubia again…), your Chubeza box is now beaming with new, vibrant faces, the return of variety, and changing flavors. A new year, a new season, a reinvigorated box…
We thank you for weathering the season’s transition with us and are delighted to celebrate this autumn and soon-to-come winter with you. Welcome!
As autumn and rain return, our thoughts remain with those who face the turmoil and pain of captivity. We wish, hope, and unceasingly beseech their safe, speedy return home, and the speedy arrival of days of peace and rebuilding …
May this be a week of good tidings for all!
